Handle House’s Brass products are of highest quality material and are very resistant to corrosion. Factors however still exists that can cause Brass to discolour or tarnish the appearance of your handles and hardware over time. This is a natural process and does not indicate a fault or defect in the manufacturing process of our products. Brass is a living finish so can Patina over time.
For Brass it is necessary to provide cleaning on a regular basis to ensure your product remains of its original high quality. Oxygen, water, and other elements can cause the metal to corrode or tarnish, over time, brass can lose their shine.
To avoid scratching and tarnishing it is recommended to clean the handles to use filtered, clean water with the cleaning sponge and then wipe over with a dry cloth. Ideally best to be carried out at regular intervals (approx. every 2 months). Avoid using household cleaners containing damaging chemicals and never use abrasive scouring pads. These chemical cleaning agents are NOT suitable as it may cause a reaction and will damage finish of the handles and knobs.
If you find a build up of residue, using a metal cleaner like our Nevr Dull Metal Cleaner can be used. Also for Chrome plated Brass this can be used.
DO NOT GO AGAINST THE GRAIN! Always rub Brass in the same direction as the grain. Rubbing against the grain will spoil the finish and Brass will lose its shine. Worse still, rubbing against the grain can damage the surface by creating microscopic crevices where dirt can collect. This can lead to corrosion or tarnishing.
